Contract Value: $7,900,000

Jackson completed the $7.9 million Enterprise Systems Services Center (ESSC) in March, 2010. The Helena ESSC is a new data and operations center for the State of Montana's Information Technology Service Division.

Project specifications:

  • 15,000 sq ft building
  • Contains 6200 sq ft of raised floor computer room
  • Can house 13 rows of racks
  • Has 576 strand redundant fiber connections to Campus WAN
  • Is cooled by KyotoCooling® - "the most innovative cooling technology in the world"

Design incorporates:

  • Critical Infrastructure DOD Security Standards
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
  • Green Building Rating System

The Helena data center will be utilizing a new cooling approach called the KyotoWheel® system from Kyoto Cooling - the first of its kind installed in the western hemisphere. The Kyoto system will take advantage of the cool air that is available in Montana most of the year allowing the unit to exchange cool air for the warm air that is inside the data center.

The Data Center successfully completed a rigorous 45 day commissioning process capped by an Interactive Systems Test (IST). During the IST a false IT Load of over 900kw was placed on all support systems including remote power, uninterruptable power supplies and generated power supplies. During the 900kw load only one of the three Kyoto Cooling units was running and was able to cool the load. The other 2 KCI units were on standby and were not called to assist in the cooling effort. The test results far exceeded the manufacturer's and the owner's expectations. The data center should be 100% live and on-line with full capacity by the end of 2010.
